EXPLORERS

THOSE WHO STAYED

PASSERSBY

Steamboats like the Myrtle Corey (shown above) were used to ply the White River carrying cargo, bringing trade, and manned by men who worked the boats, docks, and made their life aboard the ships coming to and fro.  They didn't settle Calico Rock, but they took in the natural beauty of the landscapes in the area and made her what she is today.

Some who travled up river by steamboats like the Ozark Queen (shown above) decided to stay and make their home in Calico Rock.  Settlers living on homesteads had a hard life, but could raise enough livestock, grow big enough gardens, and hunt plenty of wildlife to make a successful home.  Eventually a merchant class developed and Calico Rock began to grow.
